The West Kirby Tap has been named Wirral's Pub of the Year by real ale group CAMRA.

The organisation judges pubs on the condition and range of styles and strengths of ale they serve. They also consider whether they serve real ciders and locally brewed beers.

Announcing the winner, Wirral CAMRA said the Spitting Feathers owned hostelry has "a good range" of beers which are "particularly keenly priced".

They added: "The decor is a balance of the modern and the traditional pub, there is a real fire and dogs are welcome.

"There is often a bustling friendly atmosphere with an eclectic range of customers."

On social media, West Kirby Tap said: "A boss achievement to sneak to the top of a great pool of pubs in this fine peninsula. We were made up for the nomination and double chuffed to win!"

The Black Toad in Hoylake, which had held the title for the last two years, was named runner-up for its "friendly welcome in a quirky, characterful design...friendly and attentive" staff" and the "biggest range of snacks known to man".

The Plasterers Arms in Hoylake was named as a Wirral pub of excellence for being "a really good example of a community local".
