Tranmere Rovers extended their unbeaten start to the League Two season with a 2-0 home victory over Oldham Athletic at Prenton Park on 5 September, as reported by the Wirral Globe.
Dylan Jones opened the scoring midway through the first half in the 17th minute, finishing neatly after being played through by Tom Ince. The hosts then sealed the points with eight minutes remaining when Gus Scott-Morris handled inside the area, and Joe Ironside converted the resulting penalty.
The win means Tranmere have moved up to fourth in the League Two table after their five games, and it seems manager Darrell Clarke is pleased with the result, especially since the Rovers drew in their last two games against Rotherham United and Newport County.
"It was an end-to-end game. It looked like two really good teams going at each other," Clarke said after the match. "Everybody on both teams gave everything for the shirt, and we're pleased we've come out on the right end of a 2-0 victory."
Clarke acknowledged the mental resilience shown by his players following their previous match, when they conceded two injury-time goals. "Coming back from conceding two injury-time goals, for the boys to produce a good mentality performance like that is amazing," he said.
The Tranmere boss admitted he has been guilty in the past of not savouring successful periods. "We've got to enjoy the moment, and I've been guilty of that in the past, not enjoying the moment enough. Tonight's a good moment for us, and we'll enjoy it, but it's back to work next week. It's been a solid first five games of the season."
Clarke also praised the home support at Prenton Park. "The support we had from the fans today, the atmosphere was amazing, and if we can keep delivering performances that give them hope, I'm sure they'll get behind us."
Oldham manager Micky Mellon, returning to face his former club, was left frustrated despite his side having 22 shots on goal. "It goes without saying that I'm disappointed with the amount of opportunities that we've had at good times today," Mellon said.
Tranmere will next face Gillingham away at Prestfield Stadium on 12 September.
