Port Sunlight's learning programme has been recognised with a Sandford Award, a national honour for excellence in heritage education run by the Heritage Education Trust since 1978.

As reported by Birkenhead News, The programme, run by Port Sunlight Village Trust, is one of only four in the North West to receive the award this year. The Heritage Education Trust praised the "well planned and superbly delivered" programme, highlighting the professional team and learning volunteers who "bring their own areas of interests and expertise to the activities."

In 2025 to 26, over 2,300 learners and 30 schools took part in Port Sunlight's formal learning programme in 2025/2026. The programme includes visits to Port Sunlight Museum and the Worker's Cottage, guided walking tours, the interactive SoapWorks learning gallery, a Victorian school room, and workshops ranging from soap making to studying the census as history detectives.

Charlene Davies, Learning and Audience Development Manager at Port Sunlight Village Trust, said: "To be recognised with the Sandford Award represents a huge amount of work our small team have invested into providing every single school and learner we welcome to Port Sunlight with a high-quality, unforgettable experience."

She added that as the years have passed, learning experiences have widened to include "workshops and experiences spanning the national curriculum, building on Port Sunlight's heritage, landscapes, people, art and links to science, engineering and design."

Schools continue to visit for learning opportunities because of how valuable the experience is.
