A man has been charged with assault and seven shop thefts following an incident at a New Ferry corner shop.

As reported by Birkenhead News, police were summoned to Premier Convenience store on New Ferry Road just before 9:15am on 28 September. Reports were made that a man had taken an item from the shop and placed it down his trousers.

Staff tried to remove a bottle from the mans hand, which resulted in him becoming abusive and aggressive towards them. He tried to headbutt a member of staff and throwing products around the store. Officers attended and detained a suspect on New Ferry Road.

Joseph Daniel Fletcher, of no fixed address, was arrested and later charged with assault and shop theft. He was remanded into custody to appear at Wirral Magistrates Court.

Fletcher was charged for theft with six previous incidents across Merseyside.

Fletcher was charged in response to the following incidents:

  1. On 12 August, it was reported a man stole a box of multipacks of crisps from Tesco on Great Crosshall Street, Liverpool.

  2. The following day, a man reportedly stole a bottle of wine from Tesco on Hatton Garden in Liverpool city centre.

  3. On 14 August, a man was reported to have stolen washing items from Lidl in Kensington.

  4. A week later, on 21 August, a man reportedly stole hair care products from Boots on Grange Road, Birkenhead.

  5. On 23 August, a man was reported to have stolen meat, candles and deodorant from Asda on Grange Road, Birkenhead.

  6. Three days later, on 26 August, a man reportedly stole razors from Boots on Grange Road, Birkenhead.

Last month, Merseyside Police implemented Operation Dale across the force as part of an approach to tackling retail crime that aims to deliver faster justice for victims and help police target wider criminality linked to prolific offenders.

The operation has helped nab prolific shoplifters across the region. Last month, a Bidston woman was also charged with six shoplifting offences that occurred between June and September 2026.
