The number of hospital admissions related to falls in the Wirral has decreased by 23.6% in the last year, which is the second largest decrease in England. Two other North West areas featured in the top 20 list.
The data relates to fall-related hospital admissions for those age 65 and over.
The two other areas in the North West in the top 20 were:
Westmorland and Furness, down 14.6%, the 16th largest reduction in England and Blackpool – down 12.8%, ranking 18th.
These conclusions comes from mobility bathroom specialists Age Care Bathrooms, who analysed data provided by the Department of Health and Social Care to highlight where support is needed most across the UK before the winter months.
According to Age Care Bathrooms' analysis through their Accidental Fall Report, more than 600 people aged 65 and over are admitted to hospital after a fall in England every day. 221,600 admissions in 2024/25 were from people in this aged group.
Sam Davies, Director of Age Care Bathrooms, says:
“Most homes in this country historically haven’t been built with accessibility in mind. While that’s changing, we often see people living in homes which haven’t developed to align with changing accessibility needs."
He continued, “People want to stay in the homes that hold their memories and is close to familiar neighbours. Very often, adapting a home to how someone actually lives in it is what makes staying possible. That's why planning ahead matters - and the same goes for health and lifestyle. The best time to start is today."
Wirral services have been working to improve care of older people in the region. Earlier in October, we reported how a free dementia clinic returned to Birkenhead to help family and those affected by the condition.
