The NHS trust that runs health visiting and school nursing in Wirral will carry on doing so for another five years.

Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust has kept the contract for the 0-19+ Service Wirral, which is paid for by Wirral Council, following a competitive tender, the trust said.

The service supports more than 71,600 children and young people across the borough.

It includes:

  • Health visits.
  • School nursing.
  • Breastfeeding support.
  • The Family Nurse Partnership, which gives dedicated support to young parents.

Councillors agreed last November to recommission the service on a five-year contract worth up to £36,975,339, running from 1 February 2027 to 31 January 2032. The money comes from the council's public health grant.

The trust has run the service since 2015.

Earlier this year the service and the Family Nurse Partnership, working with Family Hubs, gained UNICEF UK Baby Friendly Initiative Gold accreditation, the highest level available.

Lindsey Costello, the trust's service director, said: "We are incredibly proud of the difference our teams make every day to the lives of children, young people and families across Wirral.

"Retaining this contract is a testament to the dedication, expertise and compassion of our staff, and the high quality services they deliver."

Chief executive Janelle Holmes said the team "works closely with families and partners".

The trust also runs other community services in the borough. Last week a Port Sunlight man backed an NHS campaign after pneumonia ended his smoking habit.

The new contract starts on 1 February 2027.
