The Clatterbridge Cancer Charity has raised over £240,000 to aid patient care and cancer research for those in Cheshire and Merseyside at its annual ball. The charity is celebrating it's 30th year, and the snazzy ball helped do that.

As reported by Birkenhead News, Sir Kenny Dalglish, Lady Marina Dalglish and Sam Quek were among 400 guests at the Rum Warehouse at Liverpool's Titanic Hotel where the ball was held. Comedian John Bishop hosted the event. The cancer charity was founded in 1996 at The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre's Wirral location in Bebington.

One patient, Jackie, has been a patient of the centre for a year. Her rare diagnosis of ocular cancer, meaning cancer of the eye, had tragically spread from her eye all the way to her liver. Her chances were slim, but she joined a clinical trial to help her cancer.

She was able to attend her daughter's wedding, and even be there for her granddaughter Phoebe's birth, thanks to the trial.

She said at the event: "No matter what happens I know I have had the best treatment I could possibly have received. I was told I had a year to live at best. Well, I am past my sell-by date, and I have renewed hope for the future."

When her story was told, Jackie was given a standing ovation.

Ms. Dalglish was presented with the Chair's Award for Outstanding Contribution by Cathy Frost, recognising her contribution to the charity over several years.

Cathy Frost said: "I would like to thank Marina for her remarkable dedication to Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. It was an honour to present the Chair's Award to her. She represents the very best of our supporters and it was fitting that on a wonderful night to mark the 30th anniversary of the charity that we celebrated her contribution."

Charity CEO Clare White described the total raised as "an incredible amount of money".

She thanked the guests for their "kindness and generosity" and thanked Jackie and her husband Darren for sharing their story.
