Tributes have been paid to a well-known Wirral character known as Davy Ha Ha, as people come together to pay for his funeral.

Davy, described as "Seacombe's Legend", is believed to have died earlier this week.

He was a regular for more than eight years at the Sunday Breakfast Club for homeless and struggling people at the Charles Thompson Mission in Birkenhead.

Donna Scully, one of the club's organisers, said in a social media tribute that he was "very loud" and could be volatile, "but always funny and he appreciated anything we gave him".

"He wore the most outrageous clothes and loved to be told he looked great," she said. "I was forever giving him gloves to lose, but he hated hats even in the freezing cold."

She said he had a "story of utter neglect as a child" and a hard adult life, and that he had seemed more settled recently.

"He was a human being and we loved him," she told the Liverpool Echo.

Little is known about Davy's life, including his surname.

Speaking to Wirral Today, Ms. Scully said she wishes she could see all the love Davy has been getting.

She confirmed also no date yet has been given for the funeral, which is being organised by an unexpected volunteer.

When no funeral had been arranged, Wirral content creator Scott Lowe set up a GoFundMe appeal to give him "a dignified farewell".

The £2,000 target was reached within hours. Mr Lowe says he will pay the funeral director directly. At the time of writing, that total has doubled, and has increased to over £4,000.

He posted: "This morning, Davy Ha Ha had no funeral arranged. Now, thanks to our community coming together, he's going to have a proper service and the send-off EVERYONE deserves."

Funeral details will be confirmed once arrangements are finalised.

Other Wirral groups are also working with people facing homelessness – Wirral Ark recently launched a children's book explaining homelessness.
