A family-run restaurant in Hoylake is celebrating 23 years in business, with its 72-year-old chef showing no signs of retiring.

Julian's Restaurant, located on Birkenhead Road, opened in 2004. The restaurant is owned by chef Julian Davies alongside his wife Jackie Davies.

Their speciality is British cuisine, and maintaining lasting relationships with patrons. The restaurant has a 4.9 star Google rating.

Julian has been in the cooking business for over five decades, working across the North West like Grosvenor in Chester and the renowned Chester restaurant Paparazzi.

The couple have continued to run the independent restaurant through two recessions, the Covid-19 pandemic and personal health challenges, with weekends regularly fully booked.

During his career, Julian has cooked for the Duke of Westminster’s family, actress Grace Kelly and footballer Sir Stanley Matthews. He has also received a Chef of the Year award.

He met Jackie while working as head chef at The Wheatsheaf in Raby, before the pair decided to open their own restaurant. They later married at Goodison Park.

Jackie said: "In 2004, we took out a loan and opened a restaurant together. Our original plan was give it ten years and see how things went. More than two decades later, we’re still here!

"We’ve been through a lot and it hasn’t been easy, but we genuinely love our customers and our regulars are like family to us."

The restaurant focuses on traditional British cuisine, with dishes made using locally sourced and premium ingredients. Its meat is sourced from Welsh butchers, as Julian is Welsh, while fish comes from Hoylake Fisheries.

The menu changes regularly and includes seasonal dishes such as lamb, venison, pheasant and fresh fish, alongside dedicated vegan and vegetarian options.

Its December festive menu will run from Wednesday, December 2, until Wednesday, December 23, with two courses priced at £25.50 on Wednesdays and Thursdays and £28.50 on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you're wondering if Julian plans to retire soon? He doesn't, despite saying so two years ago.

Julian said he and Jackie remain committed to the restaurant and the people who have supported them.

He said: "It’s been an amazing 23 years here in Hoylake but I couldn’t have done it without Jackie by my side.

"They’ve always stuck by us and have been there for us when we’ve had hard times. This restaurant is more than just a business to us — it’s what we’ve created together and a place that continues to create memories for our customers."

Julian’s Restaurant is at 20 Birkenhead Road, Hoylake. Tables can be booked by calling 0151 632 6241.
