A Wallasey nursery that was told in the spring that it urgently needed to improve has made a dramatic turn around, now meeting Ofsted's expected standard in every area.

Jan's Little Learners, on King Street, was inspected on 2 October, less than six months after its previous inspection on 15 April.

The April report found urgent improvement was needed in leadership and in children's welfare, and that four other areas needed attention, as reported by the Wirral Globe.

Previously, inspectors had raised concerns over dirty floors, broken resources, trailing cables and unsafe materials in soil.

However, the latest report notes there has been "singificant improvements" across the six concerning areas since the last inspection.

The report notes the nursery also meets the needs of the compulsory and voluntary Childcare Register, as well as safeguarding needs. Safeguarding needs were also met at the April inspection.

Ofsted concluded in their report: "Children are happy and settled in this homely environment."

Inspectors found:

  • children form good relationships with staff and know who to go to for reassurance. Staff also have "warm and responsive" relationships with the children.
  • children play well together, talk confidently and are becoming more independent before starting school. They also develop good communication skills.
  • support for children with special educational needs and disabilities has improved, with extra staff training and help from speech and language therapists, as well as 'now and next' prompts to help the children break down their day.
  • parents are happy with the care and the information they receive.

The report said: "Leaders have made significant improvements since the last inspection. They have a clear focus on improving the quality of the setting and sustaining improvements."

Inspectors said activities were not always closely matched to each child's next steps, staff needed more coaching to use the new curriculum consistently in every room, and the nursery should keep working with families on healthy packed lunches.

Last week we reported on Ofsted's report on Wallasey's Penkett Day Nursery.
