Clayface on Wirral: the Seacombe and New Brighton spots that became Gotham City

The new DC film, in cinemas since 23 October, was partly shot at Seacombe Ferry Terminal, New Brighton's Marine Promenade and the old Birkenhead Tunnel entrance.

If you've been to see the new DC film Clayface, some of Gotham City may have looked very familiar.

The horror-tinged Batman spin-off, has been in UK cinemas since 23 October, was partly filmed on Wirral in 2025.

The Warner Brothers flick stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, an actor whose attempts to repair his disfigured face turn him into the shape-shifting villain. It is directed by James Watkins. The film also stars Naomi Ackie Dr Caitlin Bates.

Here's where to spot Wirral on screen.

Seacombe Ferry Terminal

One of the biggest shoots was at Seacombe, where crews began building a set near the tunnel ventilation tower in September 2025.

The front was dressed as Gotham, with a newsstand selling the fictional Gotham Herald and Gotham Gazette, the Wirral Globe reports.

New Brighton's Marine Promenade and Tollemache Street

Scenes were filmed on the seafront outside Adventureland, with characters walking along Marine Promenade before a conversation inside one of the shops.

Documents sent to residents at the time said around 150 cast and crew would be involved, with filming overnight on 11 September from 7pm until 5.30am.

A house on Tollemache Street was made to look like an American home, and a Ferris wheel and hook-a-duck stall were used during filming.

The old Birkenhead Tunnel entrance

Crews were also seen around the old Birkenhead Tunnel entrance on Rendel Street. We reported on filming near the tunnel at the time, which caused quite a local buzz.

Across the river

In Liverpool, the Queen Elizabeth II Law Courts became Gotham Hospital, Central Library became Gotham City Crown Court, and India Buildings became Gotham City Hall. The Philharmonic Hall was turned into a nightclub called Vesuvius.

Filming ran from the end of August to the start of November 2025, with studio work at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden.
