A community group of amateur historians is bringing together experts for an all-day conference exploring Wirral's Anglo-Saxon and Viking past.
Wirral Archaeology CIC, a not-for-profit volunteer group, has organised the event, which will feature published authors and academics attempting to answer some of the peninsula's most intriguing historical questions, as reported by Birkenhead News.
Some of the questions are as follows:
Did the Battle of Brunanburh take place in Wirral? If so, where could the elusive battlefield/'Burgh' be?
What is the mysterious Dingesmere, and where is it? Can we learn more about Wirral's iconic ancient stones?
Speaking at the event are Professor Steve Harding and Dr Paul Cavill from Nottingham University, authors of the recently published Finding the Battle of Brunanburh, alongside Paul Sherman and Jim Glenister from NW Heritage.
Pete Jenkins and Dave Capener from Wirral Archaeology will also present, with Capener having authored Brunanburh and the Routes to Dingesmere. Professor Howard Williams from the University of Chester and Dr Robert Philpott from Liverpool University complete the line-up, with Philpott delivering the contextual opening lecture.
The Wirral Vikings group will also be there to demonstrate the realism of Viking and Anglo-Saxon fighting.
WirralArchaeology CIC combines research into historical records with practical work in the field, using metal-detecting surveys and archaeological investigations to explore Wirral's past. Working alongside professional historians and archaeologists, members document and assess their discoveries, helping to build a clearer picture of the area's history and uncover details that may have been overlooked.
The conference takes place at St Andrew's Church in Bebington on Saturday 14 November 2026. Doors open at 8:45 am with the event starting at 9:30 am. Tickets cost £30, including lunch and refreshments, and you can purchase them from Eventbrite.
