A Seacombe couple who murdered their 13-week-old son have had their prison sentences increased after judges ruled they were unduly lenient.

Klevi Pirjani, 38, and Nivalda Santos Pirjani, 35, were given life sentences earlier this year for the murder of their baby, Miguel.

Klevi Pirjani was told he must serve at least 19 years and Nivalda Pirjani at least 15 years.

Yesterday (Tuesday, 27 October), the Court of Appeal increased the minimum terms to 21 years and six months for Klevi Pirjani and 17 years and nine months for Nivalda Pirjani.

The sentences had been referred to the court by the Attorney General.

Police were called on 24 November 2024 after Miguel was found unresponsive at the family's home in Percy Road, Seacombe.

He was taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital, where tests found he had a fractured skull and rib fractures. He died five days later.

The BBC reported that Miguel had 41 bone fractures from at least four separate incidents.

Lord Justice Jeremy Baker, sitting with Mr Justice Goose and Mr Justice Hilliard, said: "We take the view that the resulting sentences significantly underestimated the aggravating factors, to the extent that not only do we consider that the minimum terms were unduly lenient, but that we should set them aside."

The couple watched the hearing by video link from HMP Wakefield and HMP Styal.

Detective Chief Inspector Holly Chance, of Merseyside Police, said: "Merseyside Police remains committed to protecting children and bringing offenders before the courts."
