Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team has issued a statement, warning those close to the Wirral coast of strong winds and bad weather.

The yellow weather warning issued by The Met Office comes just before storm Austen is scheduled to hit the coastline, bringing gusts of 45-55mph winds today.

The warning comes just days after a member of the public reported concerns over a man walking towards the tideline near Leasowe Castle.

Although there was no major incident declared, the man was spotted heading towards the castle in poor weather conditions on October 21. He had been out collecting fish and helping them out of fishing nets for around two hours, but said he wasn't in danger. The rescue team then stood down once he made his way safely to shore.

The bad weather conditions serve as a warning to those around New Brighton and the Mersey waterfront, due to high tides. In their post, the Coastguard said that the high tide expected this evening will reach around 879 metres, causing large waves, sea spray and overtopping.

By comparison, this morning's high tide reached 8.27m at 9:57am.

In their post, the team said: "Strong winds combined with high tides may result in large waves, sea spray and overtopping along exposed coastal locations, particularly around New Brighton and the Mersey waterfront. Please stay well back from sea walls, promenades and exposed coastal edges, especially around high tide. In a coastal emergency, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."

They also urged locals to stay safe and respect the sea, and its dangers.
