Coastguard rescuers were called out yesterday afternoon after a member of the public reported concerns about a man walking towards the tideline at Leasowe Beach.

The man was described as wearing black clothes and holding a rucksack. He was spotted heading out from Leasowe Castle as poor weather conditions and limited visibility set in.

The man, described as dressed in black with a rucksack, was spotted heading out from Leasowe Castle in poor weather conditions with limited visibility.

Wirral Coastguard Rescue Team attended and began making their way across the beach to locate him and check he was not in difficulty.

As officers kitted up and headed out, they spotted the man walking back towards shore near the Lighthouse. The team monitored his progress until he was safely back on land.

The man once ashore, confirmed he didn't need assistance. He said he'd been out collecting fish and helping them out of fishing nets. He highlighted two hours who were doing the same thing, closer to the tideline, but said they weren't in danger.

With no assistance required, the team was stood down.

The Coastguard praised the member of the public who raised the alarm, saying they did the right thing by reporting their concerns given the poor visibility at the time.

Anyone who sees someone they believe may be in difficulty along the coast should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
