Wirral Council has formally ordered occupants of the controversial Townshend Avenue encampment to remove all caravans, vehicles and infrastructure from the green belt site in Irby.

As reported by the Wirral Globe, the enforcement notice was served yesterday (21 October). The notice demanded the land to be returned to its previous condition. The land is green belt land, meaning it is legally protected, and it usually acts as a buffer between towns and the countryside.

In August, the land was purchased by three traveller families, and work began on it. Witnesses described seeing caravans on the site, and construction work taking place.

Over 30 Irby residents joined a council meeting at the beginning of the month to express their concerns over the site.

Also detailed by the Wirral Globe are the requirements of the enforcement notice for the landowners. These are as follows:

  • Stop using the land as a residential caravan site.

  • Remove all caravans and amenity buildings.

  • Remove all vehicles, plant, machinery, materials, toilet blocks, shower blocks and any other items associated with residential use.

  • Remove all septic tanks and associated drainage pipes.

  • Remove all water pipes and connections.

  • Remove all hardstanding and construction materials.

  • Restore the land by covering it with topsoil and seeding it with grass.

  • Remove all debris resulting from removal and restoration works.

    Further updates will follow.
