Leasowe Castle Hotel to go to auction next month, with the bidding beginning at £1.5 million. Shockingly, the starting price is less than half of the initially listed price - £3.5 million.
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, the historic 16th-century building, based in Moreton on Leasowe Road, was under a possession order by the High Court. It was taken by administrators in December 2025, and was a luxury wedding venue and hotel until its quick closure in February 2025.
The quick closure had terrible consequences, leaving workers unpaid and some couples' wedding plans up in the air. Staff alleged they were not paid for three months, and an investigation by the Echo discovered deterioration in the employment and building's conditions, as it received a zero hygiene rating months before closing in August 2024.
Built in 1593 by Ferdinando, the fifth Earl of Derby and later Mayor of Liverpool, Leasowe Castle was possibly used as a viewing area for the popular Wallasey races. It fell into disrepair within 60 years of construction and was only brought back to life in the 1800s as a hotel and stately home.
The building was bought by the Trustees of the Railway Convalescent Homes in 1911, who ran it until 1970. Wallasey Corporation purchased it in 1974, before Wirral Council resold it in 1980 when it was transformed into a grand hotel.
The Grade II listed property was first put on the market for £3.5m shortly after closing, before being reduced to offers in excess of £2,350,000 in June this year. It appears the hotel failed to attract a buyer at that price.
The 48-room hotel is in an ideal location, close to Leasowe Beach and Leasowe Golf Club, and comes with four large function rooms and 30 additional restaurant dining areas.
