Two women have been rescued after becoming trapped at sea on Moreton Beach this morning.
Emergency services attended the scene, with helicopters, lifeboats and more than a dozen emergency vehicles.
As reported by the Wirral Globe, the incident happened near North Wirral Coastal Park at around 11:35 am today.
It's believed the two women were walking along the stretch of beach between Meols and Leasowe when the tide came in around them, trapping them.
A HM Coastguard helicopter was dispatched alongside Coastguard rescue teams from Wirral and Crosby. An RNLI hovercraft from Hoylake and a lifeboat from New Brighton RNLI attended the scene.
The women were recovered from the water by the lifeboat crew and then directed to North West Ambulance Service paramedics for transfer to hospital. Witnesses said they were taken to Arrowe Park Hospital by ambulance rather than being airlifted.
Emergency vehicles gathered in the car park near the Green Hut café to access the beach, with customers watching on.
At least three police cars, two fire engines, four ambulances, including two incident response units typically deployed to major or high-risk emergencies, and several coastguard vehicles were present.
An air ambulance also landed on the grass banks near Leasowe Lighthouse, along with a coastguard helicopter.
One resident told the Globe that emergency services were called after two people had become trapped at sea.
Another local who was running along the promenade told the publication: "It looks like they've been walking on the beach and the tide has come in around them – it can happen so quickly. Someone on the prom has most likely seen them and called the coastguard. They've got them, and they're on their way to hospital, but who knows what they've swallowed out there?"
A spokesperson for HM Coastguard confirmed the details of the rescue operation. Merseyside Police also attended the scene.
