Liscard's Labour councillors are pleased by Wirral Council's decision to enable the demolition of the derelict Dominick House office block, as reported by Birkenhead News.
On 14 September, at a meeting of the council's Economy, Regeneration and Housing Committee, councillors approved a deal that will enable the Cherry Tree shopping centre, which adjoins Dominick House, to buy the site and demolish the derelict building.
The aim is to redevelop the site to attract new retailers to the shopping centre and Liscard.
In a joint statement, Liscard Labour councillors Janette Williamson, James Laing and Graeme Cooper said: "Our Liscard residents and businesses have told us loud and clear that they want to be rid of Dominick House, which is an unsafe eyesore that has blighted central Liscard for years. We are relieved that we can now see 'the beginning of the end' for Dominick House.
The statement continued, "After sustained lobbying from us, as Labour councillors, we are pleased that there is now a way forward, with the Cherry Tree shopping centre due to buy Dominick House and demolish it.
"This will leave the way open for the site to be developed as part of the Cherry Tree, aiming to bring new shops to the area.
The statement added that the councillors are working to "attract more top high street names" and they hope Liscard will soon have new stores to complement the town centre with national and local retailers.
