A new bus service will directly connect Heswall and Irby to Clatterbridge Hospital when publicly controlled buses launch across Wirral on 25 October.
The changes form part of a major shake-up that will see Wirral become the second area in the Liverpool City Region to run services under public ownership, following St Helens earlier this month. All routes will be renumbered to start with 4 – so the current 17 service becomes the 417.
Several improvements will benefit residents. The 417 service will gain evening and Sunday services for the first time, while the 482 to Heswall via Thurstaston will increase to hourly journeys, as reported by the Liverpool Echo. The 480 will also run hourly.
Among the changes, the 414 service will be re-routed to serve Mount Road in New Brighton and Prenton Dell.
The 471 and 472 routes will begin earlier in the day, and the 491, 492 and 495 services will operate hourly on evenings and Sundays.
A circular route has been created linking Arrowe Park Hospital with West Kirby, Meols, Hoylake, Moreton, Saughall Massie and Upton. The 407 service from Liverpool city centre will now terminate at Town Meadow, with the remaining route to West Kirby covered by the 438 and new circular services 483 and 484.
The new buses are built entirely in the UK and feature air conditioning, USB charging points and more comfortable seating. They will be clad in the yellow, black and grey Metro livery already seen on Merseyrail trains.
