New plans have been submitted for a retirement living development where Bromborough Civic Centre used to be, with details included on how the proposed building could look.
As reported by Birkenhead News, the civic centre and library on Allport Lane were sold by Wirral Council to retirement property developer McCarthy & Stone. The building closed in 2022 due to cost cuts that sadly saw several libraries across the borough shut down. The building came on the market in 2024.
The property developer submitted plans to Wirral Council last year asking to build the retirement housing on the site. Updated documents now show a mock-up of the proposal. This is not the only big recent proposed housing development in Bromborough. It was announced that Vistry also submitted plans to the council recently to build 534 homes on brownfield land off Dock Road South with some affordable and private houses.
According to planning documents, the housing block would have 46 apartments for sale to older people. 29 one-bedroom and 17 two-bedroom apartments. The three-storey building would be positioned on the south side of the site, with a car park on the north side, close to the boundary near the Co-op food store.
New mock-ups show the building will be mixed with red brick and white areas.
Planning documents describe the building as a retirement living space and say it is "a proven option for older people who wish to move into accommodation that provides comfort, security and the ability to manage independently to a greater extent."
Also stated in the documents is that the housing enables older people to "remain living in the community" and keep their peace of mind while doing so.
They also say that the development can benefit the area through new jobs. Plans state that around 35 people would be employed for what they believe is a one-year build programme. McCarthy & Stone will reportedly urge sub-contractors to employ local labour and apprentices.
