A popular charity kayaking challenge along the Wirral coastline is set to return this summer for the 14th year.
The Wirral Kayak Challenge will take place on July 12. Those involved will paddle across a 14-mile route from New Brighton to Thurstaston.
According to the Birkenhead News, people can register from as early as today (June 4). Alongside signing up, there are multiple events taking place at The Railway Pub in Meols from 7:30 to 9:30 pm.
Here's what you need to know: the registration fee is £40, and the minimum sponsorship target for participants is £100. You can hire kayaks for the day, but there's limited availability. So, bring your own if you have one.
The annual event has become a fixture in the local fundraising calendar and follows one of the region's most scenic coastal routes.
Kayakers will set off from Harrison Drive beach at around 6 am, shortly after high tide. The route takes participants behind Hilbre Island at low tide before finishing at Dee Sailing Club later in the afternoon.
Organisers expect paddlers to arrive at around 3 pm, with entertainment and celebrations planned at the finish line for participants and attendees.
Among the charities benefiting from the event is Stick 'n' Step, which provides conductive education sessions for children and young people with cerebral palsy across the region.
The charity supports over 100 families each year through its locations in Wallasey and Runcorn. Unfortunately, it relies heavily on fundraising and community support to work.
Netty Doyle, regional fundraiser for Stick 'n' Step, said in a statement: “The Wirral Kayak Challenge is always an incredible day, bringing together the community for a fantastic cause. Every paddle helps us continue supporting children with cerebral palsy and their families. We’d love to see as many people as possible take on the challenge this year.”
The challenge is expected to attract both experienced kayakers and first-time participants from across Wirral and beyond. Will you be taking part? Let us know in the comments if you're signing up.
