A water feature near Moreton train station has become so clogged with algae that a local campaigner has comically compared it to President Trump's troubled reflecting pool in Washington.
According to the Wirral Globe, Alan Howgate photographed the stagnant green water in the pool on Pasture Road and said the feature, which was once a showcase for visitors arriving by train, is now labelled as "gross".
The water garden is part of a listed landscape designed by architect Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe, originally built around the former Cadbury's factory. Once the factory closed four years ago, a new housing estate named after him, Jellicoe Gardens, was built in its place.
The feature was repaired after it leaked and was refilled, but it has since become an eyesore. It's covered in green algae, which is where the comparisons to the Lincoln Memorial Reflection Pool in Washington, D.C. come from. Separately, Trump's pool made headlines when he restored it with water, apparently the same colour blue as the American flag. Recently, the President has said he will drain the pool again, and he's blamed vandals for its appearance. Unfortunately, the pool became riddled with algae days after its restoration.
Howgate said in a statement: "It was part of a display by Cadbury's, and when people used to get off the train, they'd walk past it. Since the new housing estate went up, they repaired the bottom because it leaked. They've filled it up, and it looks a bit like Trump's reflecting pool – we've got the same problem over here!"
He added, "I feel sorry for the people who live on the estate, because they've got to see it. It's right the way along the main road. It looks gross, but no one seems to care about our environment anymore."
