Flood alerts are in full force along much of Wirral's coastline today (Tuesday, 27 October), with the Environment Agency expecting this afternoon's high tide to reach flood alert level.

This morning, the Environmental Agency updated the flood warning to say flooding was expected from 11:15 am.

A flood warning, which is one step up down from an alert, is also in place for New Brighton, where the area most at risk is the Marine Point Leisure and Retail Park. There is also a warning for properties around King's Parade and Marine Point for flooding.

The Environment Agency says it expects this afternoon's high tide to meet the flood warning threshold there. At the moment, the warnings listed remain in place.

The alerts that have been issued for Wirral are:

  • Irish Sea from New Brighton to Hoylake – spray overtopping on low-lying land and roads at the head of the Wirral, including parts of Leasowe and Wallasey
  • Irish Sea from Hilbre Island to Heswall – spray overtopping on low-lying land and roads from Hilbre Island and along the coast from West Kirby to Heswall
  • Dee Estuary from Parkgate to Chester – low-lying land and roads around the estuary.
  • Mersey Estuary from Liverpool and Wirral to Widnes – though the agency does not expect this afternoon's tide to reach the alert threshold on the Mersey.

The agency says higher than normal high tides are expected over the next two days, and it may issue further flood alerts and warnings.

It is advising people to avoid coastal roads, footpaths and car parks, which may be flooded.

The warnings follow a weekend of rough weather as Storm Boelo brought flood alerts, fallen trees and rail disruption to the borough.

Anyone heading to Hilbre Island this week should check tide times carefully before setting off – our guide to walking to Hilbre has the advice. Last week the Wirral Coastguard team urged people to take care on the coast during high tides and strong winds.

The Environment Agency says its messages will be updated by 5 pm today or as the situation changes. The latest alerts and warnings are on the government's Check for flooding service.
