The first convenience store at Wirral Waters has officially opened. The store opening marks yet another milestone in the regeneration project.
As reported by Birkenhead News, the new Sainsbury's Local on Duke Street beside the Millers Quay residential development provides a needed neighbourhood amenity for the growing community of residents, students and workers at the waterfront site. The site is popular among young tenants.
The store has created 17 new jobs. Construction began in February 2026 and was completed in less than five months, with students from Wirral Met College's Wirral Waters Construction Campus gaining practical experience while working on the project.
The store is open daily from 7 am to 11 pm and offers convenience groceries, fresh produce, food-to-go, bakery items and frozen food, alongside Click & Collect services for Argos, Habitat and Tu Clothing.
David Pilbeam, Sainsbury's Director of Acquisitions, Capital Projects and Engineering, said in a statement: "The area is developing into a thriving new neighbourhood, and we're proud to be part of that journey by bringing greater convenience, choice and value to residents, workers and visitors."
Richard Mawdsley, Wirral Waters Director of Development at Peel Waters, said the opening demonstrates growing confidence in the place being created. "As the first convenience retailer to open at Wirral Waters, it provides an important amenity for the thousands of people now living and working here and reflects the transition from vision to reality," he said.
He continued, "The fact that construction began in February and has been completed in less than five months highlights the pace at which development is now being delivered across Wirral Waters."
Wirral Council leader Councillor Paula Basnett added: "Having access to everyday essentials within walking distance of home is an important part of creating a neighbourhood where people can enjoy living, working and spending time. It's great to see another piece of the plan coming to life."
The project was created in collaboration with Peel Waters as part of the Wirral Waters regeneration project, turning the docklands into a multi-purpose waterfront destination. As well as the Sainsbury's and its importance in everyday life, plans were recently approved to create a £18 million hub for manufacturing and logistics businesses.
Still, the Sainsbury's is a welcome new addition, including on-site EV Chargers and direct access from the new quayside walkway along Northbank.
