A major new logistics and employment hub has been approved at Wirral Waters, with the council leader saying the £18 million development shows the borough is "open for business".

According to Birkenhead News, water regeneration specialists from Peel Waters were given planning permission for the next phase of development at MEA Park West. They want to transform the dockside location near Wallasey Bridge Road into a place for thriving industrial, manufacturing and logistics businesses. The area is already popular for property, with waterside developments like Millers Quay.

This is only one of three planning applications submitted to the council for the site. The combined plans will total 171,400 sq ft of new employment space at the brownfield dockside location, creating over 200 new jobs. Two permissions were granted in March 2026, with this final approval triggering the first phase of delivery.

The first phase creates a new 44,982 sq ft industrial and logistics building with ancillary office space, 53 car parking spaces with disabled and electric vehicle provisions, cycle and motorcycle parking, new estate roads to unlock future plots, an electricity substation, and landscaping and drainage infrastructure.

The site is within the Liverpool City Region Freeport, which is an economic zone across Merseyside. It is centred around the Port of Liverpool and gives businesses tax breaks, easier customs rules, and faster local planning processes. It also focuses on employment growth, and this zone is backed by Wirral Council.

For employment purposes, office accommodation will front the main approach to create an active frontage, while service yards are positioned to the rear. The office buildings will face the main entrance to create a welcoming street view, while the service areas will be located at the back.

Councillor Paula Basnett, leader of Wirral Council, said the development represents "another important step forward in bringing investment, jobs and opportunities to our borough".

She added: "Wirral Council is committed to supporting business growth, and Mea Park West, located within the Liverpool City Region Freeport, will deliver high-quality employment space while transforming a currently underused dockside site.

"This development will build on and complement the wider plans for Mea Park approved earlier this year, including the transformation of the nearby Mobil building. These projects will help unlock the area's potential, attract new businesses and create new and lasting employment opportunities for local people."

Richard Mawdsley, Wirral Waters development director at Peel Waters, said securing planning consent was "a significant milestone".

He added: "Mea Park is part of the Liverpool City Region Freeport and offers a highly connected, well-planned environment for modern businesses. This approval strengthens our ability to respond to growing demand for logistics and industrial space, while supporting Wirral's wider economic ambitions.

The development forms part of the long-term vision for Wirral Waters, one of the UK's largest regeneration projects being delivered over 30 years by Peel Waters.
