Residents of the first completed homes at Wirral Waters have spoken about life in the reinvented Birkenhead dockland apartments. Many have praised the community spirit, but called for more local facilities.
The £130 million Millers Quay development delivered 500 new homes to Birkenhead docks, across six apartment blocks. The scheme is one part of Peel's huge Wirral Waters project, aimed at regenerating the waterfront area.
Resident Harley Muirhead told the Echo: "It's great living here, there's a strong sense of community here already. From living here, I've made so many new friends, and we've set up a dog walking group. The flats themselves are really modern; we're the first people to have moved into them so they're all clean and top spec."
Another resident, Ellie Rose Rainford, added: "I think it's lovely here. I love it. It's an amazing view of all the water and the people are really nice. I think there already is a community here. We've got a group chat that people are always messaging in."
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, residents acknowledged they have moved to the area "ahead of the curve" while the wider Wirral Waters scheme remains in its early stages. A Sainsbury's Local opened next to the development on Duke Street back in July, but locals still want more things to do.
A David Lloyd gym is also in the pipeline in the area.
Neighbour Jackie Snell said she is looking forward to seeing more amenities such as coffee shops and bars open in the area.
Richard Mawdsley, director of development at Wirral Waters, said the occupied residential development is "acting as a real catalyst" for other plans by Wirral Waters. He said Millers Quay has proven "there is a market for this type of development in Wirral".
Mr Mawdsley added: "The Sainsbury's Local that opened in the summer, alongside a pipeline of other projects – the David Lloyd, MEA Park West and more residential – means we have delivery momentum at Wirral Waters that we really need to see continuing."
