Construction work on the new Birkenhead Market is set to begin in the coming days, marking a significant milestone for our historic shopping hub, according to the Wirral View.

The former TJ Hughes building in Birkenhead town centre will be the market's new home after it was announced that Krol Corlett Construction will take on the project. The company was awarded a Pre-Construction Services Agreement and enabling works contract after a formal procurement process.

In November 2025, Wirral Council's Economy Regeneration and Housing Committee agreed to relocate traders individually or collectively to refurbished units within Birkenhead town centre. After this, the existing area for the market will be demolished and available for future use.

The council wants to create a new market that will maximise space and provide a welcoming environment for shoppers. Discussions with current market traders are ongoing as the plans come to fruition.

Council leader Paula Basnett said in a statement: "This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Birkenhead Market, and for the town centre as a whole. A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes to get to this stage. I'm incredibly pleased that people will soon start to see a real transformation getting underway at the former TJ Hughes site."

She added: "Birkenhead Market's greatest strength has always been the people who make it what it is, and despite the challenges of recent years our traders have continued to serve customers and champion the market. Their partnership and commitment have been instrumental in bringing us to this point and will continue to be vital as we create a market fit for the future."

Daniel Tebay, managing director of Krol Corlett Construction, said the company was "delighted" to be working on the market plans. He added that the new market would help to create a "modern destination" while also considering its history and current place within Birkenhead's town centre and community.

An exact start date hasn't been announced.
