Birkenhead has another reason to appeal to potential commuters - it has the lowest average house prices of any commuter town in the UK, according to new analysis from consumer lending company Pepper Money.
The analysis compared 66 locations across the UK, so it's not a comprehensive view of average house prices across all commuter towns in the UK.
Research found the average home in Birkenhead costs £148,911, with the town ranking first overall in its 2026 commuter town index with a score of 83 out of 100, according to The Intermediary.
The research compared property prices, rent prices, commuting times, fares, local earnings, and quality of life across towns, which served nine large cities.
Interestingly, Wallasey was also featured in the top ten, ranking fifth, with an average house price of £182,475. Widnes, another Liverpool commuter town, ranked 10th at £214,374.
Six of the 10 highest-ranked towns in the index served either Liverpool or Sheffield, with five of those six having average house prices below £215,000.
Other lower-priced locations included Doncaster at £173,000, Barnsley at £174,000 and Rotherham at £190,000.
As you may have guessed, the analysis shows a sharp price decrease from London commuter towns.
For example, the average home in St Albans costs £638,000, which is more than four times Birkenhead's average and a difference of £489,089. The news is good for Birkenhead, since Wirral Council is on a mission to regenerate the town through its Town of Culture bid, and attempt to secure UNESCO World Heritage Status for Birkenhead landmark Birkenhead Park.
In fact, Birkenhead Park and Central Park are now working together on Birkenhead's UNESCO bid, since Central Park was inspired by the Wirral park.
Wirral Heritage Champion Councillor Jerry William said a Wirral representative will visit New York to continue the working relationship. He also hinted that an "exceptionally productive" Zoom meeting had occurred between staff in the Wirral and the Central Park Conservancy recently, hinting at the potential for Birkenhead to become a huge tourism destination.
