The Salvation Army Birkenhead is asking for your help in donating new toys and gives so no local children go without a present this Christmas.

The charity's Christmas Present Appeal is open for donations of new and unwrapped gifts. Gifts are being collected until 4 December.

Last year, the local church and charity gave gifts to more than 400 children. The charity sad it fears even more families will need help this year, due to the rising cost in living.

Sam Hamilton, church leader of The Salvation Army in Birkenhead, said: "This Christmas families are wondering how they'll get through the week.

"We believe every child deserves to experience joy on Christmas morning."

Gifts can be dropped off at:

  • the Salvation Army church and community centre on Vincent Street.
  • the Salvation Army charity shop on Oxton Road.

Ideas for gifts include:

  • educational toys, dolls, action figures and bath toys.
  • books, including learn-to-read books for babies and toddlers.
  • baby clothes, gloves, scarves, hats and T-shirts.
  • sports equipment, hair accessories and toiletries (non-allergic if possible).
  • gift vouchers for older children.

People who cannot drop off a gift can donate money through the appeal's JustGiving page.

The gifts will be shared out to children and families through local groups, schools and social services.

Earlier this year we reported on the volunteers celebrated by the Salvation Army in Birkenhead.
