North End Bonfire at Birkenhead's Ilchester Park cancelled this year

Organisers say they have not felt 'included or recognised', but hope to work with the council and councillors on a bigger event from 2027.

The North End Bonfire, traditionally held at Ilchester Park in Birkenhead on Bonfire Night, will unfortunately not go ahead this year.

Organisers announced the cancellation on Facebook with "great sadness and disappointment", the Wirral Globe reports.

Organisers added "many factors" were the reason for the cancelation. They also felt they hadn't been "included or recognised for the good that we do nor given the financial support we feel we deserve".

But they said they hoped to be working "much more closely with local authorities and local councillors" from January 2027, to run "a safe and much more spectacular show for our people".

Last year's event was surrounded by confusion. North Birkenhead Development Trust had been due to run a bonfire and fireworks at the park on 5 November 2025, but withdrew as organiser.

On the day, Wirral Council told people they "should not attend". It said the bonfire had been built bigger than the limit set by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, which was a condition of the land use agreement, so any activity was unauthorised.

Hundreds of people turned up anyway, and a bonfire and fireworks went ahead.

In their statement, this year's organisers said they had always prioritised "putting on free events for families and children".

They said they were also considering summer, music and Christmas events, adding: "Keep an eye out for us come January as we begin our big push and venture into what are exciting times for the Northend."

They asked people to "be safe and be mindful of others" this Bonfire Night.

It is the second Wirral community bonfire to be called off this year, after the Woodchurch Estate bonfire was cancelled last month.

Displays still going ahead tomorrow include Tranmere Rovers' fireworks at Prenton Park and a free event at Central Park in Wallasey. Details are in our Bonfire Night guide.
