Workers at a Wirral dock are set to strike after rejecting what their union has deemed an "appalling low" pay offer.
As reported by Birkenhead News, more than a dozen workers from GAC at the Queen Elizabeth II Dock in Eastham will take industrial action in September. Allegedly, some workers were offered a pay increase as low as two percent. The union has said that amount is more in line with what a pay cut would be, given the current economy and rising inflation levels.
Workers are also angry about on-call arrangements at the dock.
GAC is one of the largest ship providers of ship agencies, and they employ more than 7,500 people in over 50 countries. Their Eastham dock site opened in 2020.
Strike action will take place on 1, 3, 14 and 16 September, with picket lines running from 7 am until 12 pm at the dockside in Eastham on each of those days.
Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said in a statement: "This is an appalling low offer from GAC, and our members won't stand for another year of below-inflation pay offers that will make them worse off. They have the full backing of Unite in this dispute against a company that can easily afford to pay them properly for the incredibly valuable work they perform."
