The Wirral Park Hotel in Greasby has moved to quash false rumours circulating on social media and has condemned threats and intimidation aimed at its staff.
In a statement posted on Facebook this afternoon, the recently reopened Greasby Road hotel said it was aware of comments suggesting it was being used as a "migrant hotel," and stated that this was not the case and that it had no intention of becoming one.
The guests currently staying, it said, are genuine hotel guests who the business is happy to welcome.
The hotel - the former Premier Inn, which reopened under new ownership on 1 July - said unverified claims of this kind could seriously damage the reputation of an independent local business it is working hard to build, and asked people not to speculate or share information that is inaccurate.
It also said staff had been subjected to threats and intimidating comments, adding that it has "zero tolerance" for such behaviour.
"We are also aware of threats and intimidating comments being made towards our staff. We have zero tolerance for this behaviour," the statement said.
"Our staff deserve to feel safe at work and our guests deserve to enjoy their stay without being subjected to hostility or intimidation."
Describing hospitality as "a challenging business, particularly for independent, local hotels," the hotel asked people to "consider the consequences before sharing unverified claims," and confirmed it "remains a hotel welcoming guests for holidays, sightseeing and other visits such as hospital stays or visiting family, just as it always has."
