A 15-year-old boy has been arrested after a teenager was stabbed and slashed in Birkenhead Park in the early hours of June 28.

We reported how Merseyside Police were called to the park for a stabbing at around 1:45am where a 19-year-old suffered a serious laceration to his stomach and hand, and a wound on his thigh.

The park south of Ashville Road was cordoned off following the attack, and the police stayed in the area into the afternoon, focusing their investigation on Birkenhead Park Cricket Club.

It is understood there was an 18th birthday party inside the cricket club's pavilion on Saturday night, though police have not confirmed whether the incident is connected to the event.

Today, according to the Liverpool Echo, police confirmed a 15-year-old boy from Birkenhead has been arrested on suspicion of section 18 wounding with intent. He remains in police custody.

Detective Inspector Phil Ryan said in a statement: "Our investigation into this incident is gathering pace and a suspect is currently in custody. I hope this reassures our community how seriously we take reports of this nature. Violence on our streets and in our local parks will never be tolerated."

He added that although an arrest has been made, police are still appealing for information on the attack and its motive.
