A dedicated group of New Brighton residents has stepped in to save a summer of free events and mark the 100th anniversary of Vale Park's iconic bandstand this weekend.
According to InYourArea, 28 volunteers formed on 2 June, following the disbandment of another volunteer group that had cancelled free events. The new group started even without a budget, but with community and council support, and has since organised seven free events across July and August.
All of their hard work has come together for the 100th anniversary this weekend. The community effort, which all comes together under the Facebook page Valeparkvolunteers2026, has brought together local schools, charities, neighbourhood groups and national organisations including supermarket community champions.
As well as the volunteers themselves, schoolchildren have played a central role in preparing the park for the milestone. Pupils at New Brighton Primary School have created 169 posters describing what the park and the bandstand mean to them, while children from another school have made a custom anniversary banner.
Further decorative contributions include a knitted and crocheted banner made by the Wirral Chinese Association, as well as hand-knitted bunting created by the Black Pearl New Brighton volunteer group.
Adding to the festivities, volunteers installed an Alice in Wonderland scarecrow display as part of the local free community scarecrow festival. Local charities and voluntary groups have been invited to host fundraising stalls free of charge on Saturday, allowing non-profit causes to profile their work and raise vital funds.
