Wirral runners, get your shoes on, because there's a new parkrun coming to New Brighton! As reported by the Wirral View, Wirral Council's Active Wellbeing team is finalising plans for a weekly 5km event at Vale Park.
The route will take participants through the Green Flag-awarded park and along New Brighton Promenade, where views across the Mersey to Liverpool are prominent. Funding has been secured, and the route has been mapped out.
But if you're not a Strava addict, here's what a park run is. In a nutshell, they're free events held usually on a Saturday morning and are open to anyone who wants to get active. Birkenhead already has its own parkrun, held in Birkenhead Park, but it is not one of the many on the Wirral. In fact, it's reportedly the only 5km parkrun in the borough. There is a junior one that takes place every Sunday at 9 am for those aged four to 14 at Wirral Country Park, but there still reportedly aren't many others.
However, for this event to succeed, organisers are looking for volunteers between 8:30 am and 10:30 am every Saturday to facilitate the event. They need event directors, greeters, course checkers, timekeepers, marshals, photographers, and tail walkers.
No experience is needed to join.
Councillor Jenny Johnson said: "Volunteers are at the heart of every parkrun. They help create welcoming community events that bring people together, encourage healthier lifestyles and support people of all ages and abilities to get active."
Fiona Hanik, Health Development Officer for Active Wirral, said: "We are really excited to be setting up a new parkrun event in Vale Park. So far, there has been an excellent response from residents wishing to volunteer, which is fantastic news, but the more the merrier."
