A new mental health initiative has been launched in Wirral aimed at supporting men struggling with loneliness, anxiety, and isolation through group cycling sessions.
The Mersey Mind Project has introduced Cycling Therapy, a monthly programme of social rides across the Wirral and Liverpool to pair physical activity with informal peer support, according to Birkenhead News.
If you want to take part, the first ride will take place on July 5 at 11 am, beginning at Hype Urban Bikes on Coastal Road, New Brighton, and more sessions will be planned each month all the way until October 25.
The Mersey Mind Project's new programme expands on its charity work across fitness sessions and bootcamps. They also head Football Therapy.
Mersey Mind Project’s Chris Guy said in a statement: “The connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing is well established, but cycling offers some unique benefits. The rhythmic, repetitive motion of cycling can have a calming effect on the nervous system. Combined with fresh air and natural surroundings, riding can help quiet racing thoughts and reduce feelings of overwhelm.”
He added that group rides can help participants process emotions, build confidence, and form connections, often making it easier for people to open up than in more formal settings.
Rather than traditional face-to-face therapy settings, Cycling Therapy encourages participants to connect while getting active.
The rides will explore local routes including the Wirral Way, Chester canal paths, and the Liverpool Loop Line. Sessions are open to all ability levels, and no prior experience is needed for those of you who won't be in the Tour de France anytime soon.
Cycling UK is also supporting the local programme alongside Mersey Mind Project to tackle the stigma around men's mental health and work on providing community support.
