A heroic New Brighton teenager received two bravery awards for his attempts to save his brother, who sadly drowned at Crosby Beach last summer.

As reported by Birkenhead News, Anthony Halliday was given a Bronze medal from the Humane and Shipwreck Society and the Eric Deakin medal. The Eric Deakin medal is one of the most prestigious of its kind, given for the most meritorious water rescue of 2024. He received it at a ceremony at the Cotton Exchange in Liverpool on 24 June.

Surprisingly, the medal had not been awarded for more than six years before Anthony received it.

Just over two years ago, on 30 June, Anthony was at Crosby Beach with his brother Daniel and another unnamed person for a day out. His brother was quickly swept out to sea, so Anthony courageously tried to assist him in getting to safety as the water carried him away.

Unfortunately, despite Anthony's efforts and the efforts of many rescue services, including the Coastguard and Hoylake and New Brighton RNLI, Daniel could not be saved.

Anthony was nominated for the awards by New Brighton RNLI, and representatives from the lifeboat station attended the ceremony alongside his family. Chris Riley from the Humane and Shipwreck Society presented the medals.

Local charity An Hour for Others assisted with arranging and hosting the awards evening, working closely with New Brighton RNLI.

Mark Harding, Helm at New Brighton RNLI, said in a statement: "This was an incredibly important and emotional event for ourselves, Anthony, and his family. So much of the brave efforts that Anthony made that sad day to save his brother went unmentioned in the tragedy, and we felt it was only right that he was duly honoured for his unbelievable bravery and selflessness."

He added that although nothing can heal the pain of losing Daniel, he hoped the award and ceremony could honour his memory.
