A heavily pregnant cat has been found abandoned in a cat carrier on a Wallasey bridle path, prompting an appeal from the RSPCA.
According to Birkenhead News, the feline was discovered on the bridle path off Green Lane last Wednesday. The cat was left in a cat carrier, which was placed inside a large carrier bag.
RSPCA Inspector Nadine Pengilly said in a statement: "It is very concerning that someone dumped her like she was rubbish. As she was left with a cat carrier, someone must have gone out of their way to leave her there."
She continued, "It's sad to think she has most likely been dumped because she is heavily pregnant, at a time when she needed help, not abandoned without thought or care for her welfare."
The cat, Daisey, is estimated to be around four years old. Thankfully, she is now in loving hands, being taken care of at the RSPCA Wirral & Chester Branch as she nears giving birth.
The dumping has caused quite a stir online, with residents calling the incident "cruel" and wishing the cat well on her birth journey. Heartbreakingly, Daisey's temperament was described as friendly and nice by the RSPCA.
The charity is urging cat owners to neuter their pets, as there is an ongoing capacity and welfare crisis of cats in the UK. The RSPCA reportedly adopts more cats than any other animal, with branches and centres finding homes for almost 47 cats a day across England and Wales.
Last December saw a 30% increase in cats in care compared to the previous year – an unprecedented rise for that time of year.
The RSPCA neutered 3,218 cats at national centres and animal hospitals across England and Wales last year, with thousands more neutered by local branches.
The RSPCA is urging those with information on Daisey's origins to contact them on 0300 123 8018, quoting incident 01830552.
