Unilever has finished a £150 million investment at its Port Sunlight manufacturing site.
The substantial investment programme at the historic facility marks a significant commitment to the area where the company's predecessor, Lever Brothers, first established operations in the late 19th century.
Port Sunlight remains one of Unilever's key production sites, with the factory continuing to manufacture household products for the global market.
The investment includes upgrades to the site's Home Care factory, where products including Persil, Surf, and Comfort are made, as well as a new automated distribution centre linked directly to the site's three factories.
According to the company, the improvements will increase laundry capsule production and support the launch of Persil's new four-chamber capsules, which were developed at Unilever's research and development facilities in Port Sunlight.
The new distribution centre is designed to make operations more efficient by allowing products to move directly from the factories to storage and dispatch. Unilever says the facility can handle up to 17,000 pallets each week!
The development is also expected to help the environment. By reducing transportation between warehouses, there are fewer lorry journeys and less pollution. The company says this could cut logistics-related carbon emissions by around 827 tonnes each year.
Marc Woodward, Head of Unilever UK, said in a statement: "This is a landmark moment for Port Sunlight. The completion of investments in Home Care manufacturing and the opening of a new flagship distribution centre will support the growth of our business and reinforce Port Sunlight’s role as a strategic hub for our UK and European operations."
