The Sayers branch on Banks Road in West Kirby was confirmed as permanently closed last year, and according to research by the Liverpool Echo, over 30 Sayers and Pound Bakery sites have been listed as 'permanently closed' on Google or removed from the Sayers website following announced closures.
S&PB Retail Ltd, which owns both bakery chains, announced plans to close around 19 Sayers stores at the end of August, saying they were "no longer commercially viable". The closures were expected to result in approximately 100 redundancies from the company's 800-strong workforce.
However, this hasn't been confirmed.
The West Kirby and Tranmere Sayers branches are among 22 stores no longer listed on the company's website. Other locations across Merseyside, including the Wirral's Bidston location, as well as others in Belle Vale, Bootle Knowsley Road, and Garston, were on the chopping block.
A further 12 Pound Bakery stores have also shut, including the Old Swan branch in Liverpool and the Huyton store.
The Echo reported that staff at some locations were given just 24 hours' notice that their branch would close. One employee told the outlet they were now waiting to look into redundancy after being informed on September 3 that their store would shut the following day.
The company became well known across Merseyside, starting as a family business in Old Swan in 1912, run by Fred and Lylian Sayer. They sold baked goods from a basement kitchen, and now the business has expanded to a huge chain in the North. The chain is now owned by Mark James and David Silvester.
A spokesperson previously said: "In response to the ever-evolving High Street and wider market challenges, S&PB Retail Ltd has initiated a strategic restructuring programme to ensure a stronger and more sustainable future for the business. These changes are designed to strengthen the company's long-term operational and financial performance and ensure continued stability."
