A young boy was left shaken after witnessing a man being stabbed in broad daylight on a Wirral estate, according to his mother.
Emergency services were called to Hoole Road in Woodchurch at around 3.40 pm on June 25, following reports that a man in his 60s had been attacked. The victim suffered stab wounds to his shoulder and rib cage before being treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital. His condition has been described as serious but stable.
Merseyside Police arrested a 40-year-old man from Noctorum on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He remains in custody while detectives continue their investigation.
According to the Liverpool Echo, A local mother said her 10-year-old son witnessed the aftermath while sitting nearby eating an ice lolly. She said he shouted to her that someone had been stabbed after seeing the injured man, who residents said uses a wheelchair and is unable to speak.
The woman claimed the victim could only communicate by pointing towards his injuries. She also alleged the suspect fled towards the rear of nearby shops after the incident, leaving blood on the road.
Residents described the victim as a well-known and respected member of the community and expressed shock at the attack. One local said they believed the assault was completely unprovoked and could not understand why anyone would target him.
Police cordons remained in place on Friday around part of The Meadow and behind the Hoole Road shopping parade while forensic enquiries continued. A wheelchair believed to belong to the victim was covered by a tarpaulin before later being removed from the scene.
Detective Inspector Andy Schofield urged anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward, saying officers are determined to bring those responsible to justice. Anyone with information is asked to contact Merseyside Police, quoting reference log 856 of June 25.
