Parts of Moreton Common were taped off yesterday for a strange reason.
As reported by the Wirral Globe, workers were carrying out trials for drones linked to the Burbo Bank offshore wind farm.
The wind farm, based in Liverpool, is located on the Burbo Flats in Liverpool Bay. It is operated by Ørsted, who run 12 offshore wind farms in the UK. The Burbo Bank one was commissioned in 2007 and has 25 wind turbines. This was extended in 2017. With the extension, over 230,000 homes can be powered.
To keep the public away from drone testing, the common was cordoned off.
Witnesses said they were told the trial was to test if drones could be flown to the offshore wind farms for inspections. They wanted to enable equipment checks to be done without needing ferry workers to test the turbines, improving efficiency.
The Burbo Bank wind farm is visible from Moreton Shore and other parts of the Wirral coastline.
