The Liverpool Waters Dragon Boat has smashed records and fundraising targets, with this year's event raising £45,000, bringing the overall total to more than £200,000 for Claire House Children's Hospice.
As reported by Birkenhead News, the annual charity challenge, which takes place at Princes Dock, set three new records: The highest number of competitors, the greatest number of businesses entering teams at 24, and the largest amount raised in a single event.
Claire House Hospice opened in December 1998 in Bebington. The charity helps terminally ill babies, young adults and children. They now have multiple locations across Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Wales.
Funds from this year's race will support the charity's Liverpool appeal to transform its West Derby site into a full children's hospice.
A combined crew from Avison Young and Fisher German claimed first place, with Vital Energi and Ener-Vate UK in second. First-time participants Wyld Sauna took third place, while The Bus Yard and Claire House Children's Hospice were awarded the wooden spoon.
The Bus Yard's waterfront venue turned into a competitor and spectator village to celebrate the event.
Liza Marco, Liverpool Waters Associate Director at Peel Waters, said: "What began more than a decade ago as a fun way to bring our business community together has grown into an incredible event that continues to make a real difference to local families. To break three records in a single year is a fantastic achievement."
Jennifer Hanley, Corporate Fundraiser at Claire House, said: "Last year alone, we supported over 500 local families, with 124 of those being at the end of a child's life. Having recently obtained planning permission to transform our West Derby site into a full children's hospice, we were delighted that Liverpool Waters wanted to put this incredible total directly towards our Claire House Liverpool appeal."
