Plans have been submitted to replace the modular building that houses Arrowe Park Hospital's Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit with a permanent extension.

Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has applied to Wirral Council for the work, which would be done in two phases.

First, windows would be replaced on the hospital walls facing the internal courtyard. Then the existing single-storey modular building would be demolished and replaced with a permanent single-storey healthcare extension.

A design and access statement with the application says the modular building is in "poor condition" and is not suitable as long-term accommodation.

The new unit would connect directly to the main hospital and the Emergency Department.

The current building covers about 514 square metres. The replacement would cover about 441 square metres.

An earlier two-storey design of about 946 square metres was considered in talks with the council, but has been scaled back.

The trust says the work is meant to improve the "physical quality and functionality" of the accommodation. The plans say there would be no increase in staff, patients, traffic or parking demand.

The extension would sit within the hospital's existing courtyard, surrounded by buildings of up to about four storeys. A house sparrow terrace would be fitted to one wall.

It follows the opening of Arrowe Park's new £40m urgent and emergency care facility in August.

The application will be decided by Wirral Council. Details are on the council's planning website. The application reference number is APP/26/01386.
