A man is fighting for his life in hospital after a crash inside the Queensway Tunnel yesterday afternoon.
The Birkenhead Tunnel was shut for several hours yesterday after a Sur-Ron bike crashed inside, as reported by the Liverpool Echo.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the one-vehicle crash just before 1:05 pm.
The rider is a man in his 20s from Liverpool, and he remains in critical condition in hospital.
The crash occurred on the Birkenhead to Liverpool carriageway, approximately two-thirds of the way through the tunnel. Merseyside Police is appealing for anyone who saw the bike entering the toll booth area at Birkenhead to contact them.
A spokesperson said many vehicles were travelling in the opposite direction who would have seen the bike.
Detective Sergeant Kurt Timpson, Lead Investigating Officer from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said in a statement: "I would like to thank everyone for their patience as we dealt with the incident in the Queensway Tunnel yesterday.
"The tunnel was closed for a number of hours to allow us to carry out vital investigation work. The rider of the bike remains in a critical condition in hospital, and our thoughts are with his family."
