A new campaign has launched in the Wirral to celebrate local volunteers helping to improve the environment and encouraging their communities to get involved.
As reported by Birkenhead News, the council has relaunched its ‘Love Where You Live’ initiative, supporting activities such as litter-picking and other projects aimed at making neighbourhoods cleaner and more attractive.
Via the council, local groups can access equipment like hi-vis jackets, litter pickers, litter hoops, and bin bags to help with organised activities.
Celebrating the campaign's launch, council leaders visited the Friends of Mayer Park in Bebington, which is one of the Wirral's most well-known environmental community groups.
They've been working in the park for 12 years and meeting twice a week to maintain it and carry out improvements with help from ground maintenance staff and council park rangers.
Recently they transformed the park's Rose Garden, and the council later installed handrails on the steps leading to the area. In another park garden in Vale Park, New Brighton, a robot village has been created to help improve mental health with positive affirmations next to the robots.
Wirral Council leader Councillor Paula Basnett said the work showed what could be achieved when residents and the council worked together.
She said: "Small actions can make a big difference when people pull together towards a common goal."
She also encouraged other community groups to talk to the council to promote what they're doing in areas across the Wirral, even if they're small or new.
Councillor Max Booth, chair of the council's Environment, Climate Emergency and Transport Committee, said the authority was looking forward to seeing new ideas from residents.
The council is now encouraging established and new community groups across Wirral to share their work and access support, including equipment, rubbish collections and other resources.
The campaign aims to encourage more people to take pride in their surroundings and help keep Wirral clean and welcoming.
