A Heswall fish and chip shop has been recognised as one of the best chippies in the country in a national award ceremony.
According to the Liverpool Echo, Pisces on Heswall's popular Telegraph Road received two 'highly recommended honours' at the English Fish and Chip Awards (yes, this is a real thing), which were held in Manchester last week.
The two awards were for Best Fish and Chip Shop in the North West and for Best Fish Fryer of the Year. Pisces opened in 2004, and they specialise in fresh fish and chips with a mission to "[create] unforgettable moments that last a lifetime". The family business began over 60 years ago by both sets of grandparents.
Paramount Creative, who run the award ceremony, send judges to visit each finalist before making their final decision. But the Best Fish Fryer winner is uniquely decided by a live cook-off on the day of the final.
Merseyside seems to be a popular place for good chippies, as five shops in total in the region were recognised. Here is the list in no particular order:
Chippy T, Southport (Winner) - Best Fish & Chips in the North West
Flyde Fish Bar, Marshside, Southport
The Good Catch, Formby
Harpers Fish and Chips Southport
Piseces, Heswall, Wirral (Highly Recommended) - Best Chip Shop in the North West, Best Fryer of the Year
Awards director Warren Paul said: "The places and people honoured in this first edition of the English Fish and Chip Awards are the absolute best right now, so please go try them."
He added that the awards aimed to support local businesses during challenging times for the hospitality sector. "It's vital to support local businesses in your area, or these traditional family spots simply will not exist in the future," he said.
The award ceremony is new, but if Merseyside continues to reign, then maybe there will be even more of them up for praise next year.
