Future Yard has unveiled a large programme for this autumn and winter season as it continues to prepare to open a 600-capacity live venue in Birkenhead before this year concludes. Construction began in March 2026, but they're hoping to make lots of headway.
The expansion will allow Future Yard to host more than 50 shows a year, according to the Liverpool Echo, and over 150 extra performance opportunities for local artists in the live room.
Leading the programme is Mercury Prize-shortlisted Scottish multi-instrumentalist corto.alto, who will return to the venue in November following a sold-out show earlier this year. Detroit hip hop icon Xzibit, experimental art-rock quintet Squid and Brit Award-winning singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone are also on the bill.
Some old stars are also scheduled to perform, such as DJ legend Grandmaster Flash on 24 October, author Irvine Welsh on 11 December, and Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band on 18 December. The programme kicks off on 4 September with DJ Yoda's 90s Mixtape.
The expansion goes beyond the stage. The expansion will reportedly give 2,000 extra hours of practical experience for Sound Check trainees and the option for 3,500 children annually to access the venue's new School Music Curriculum. Twelve acoustically treated multi-use studio and teaching spaces will connect the new venue to Future Yard's existing live space.
Future Yard was established back in 2020 and has become a fixture in the area, bringing national and international artists into the Wirral and giving musical opportunities to local artists.
Christopher Torpey, co-founder of Future Yard, called the new programme a "real step-up".
He added, "It's really important for the town, too, to see Birkenhead appearing on tour listings of this magnitude and welcoming musicians from across the world to our home, especially at a moment when opportunities are scarce and times are tough.
"We genuinely can't wait to invite people inside for a show, share in the excitement and experience this hopeful new direction for the town. The Future is Birkenhead!"
