Plans for how the new Birkenhead Market could look have been submitted to Wirral Council, according to the Liverpool Echo. The market is expected to move to the former TJ Hughes building, with construction announced earlier this week to begin in the upcoming days.
A planning application made by the council details the changes to the exterior part of the building. The main entrance to the new market will be from the north side on Borough Pavement, where a new glazed sliding double door will be installed with what plans describe as a "neutral and contemporary material palette."
A second entrance to the market will be created between the main entrance and the CEX unit next door. The shopfront will be upgraded as part of the works. Planning permission is being requested for outside changes, as the internal changes don't require planning permission to go ahead.
With the move looming, it is said that market traders are set to move into the new location, with talks still being held with existing ones. This could happen by the end of the year.
Wirral Council leader Councillor Paula Basnett said in a statement: "This marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Birkenhead Market, and for the town centre as a whole. A huge amount of work has been going on behind the scenes to get to this stage."
"I'm incredibly pleased that people will soon start to see a real transformation getting underway at the former TJ Hughes site to create the town's new market.
She continued by saying that the people are the ones who make the market "what it is" and she praised their patience while the market plans were up in the air.
She concluded, "This is fantastic for Birkenhead, for traders and for local people, and will be placing the Market at the heart of the town centre where it should be."
